Water:  After the water is prepared, a person must clear the items from inside including the skimmer basket, ladder, and wall fittings. When storing hoses, it is never wise to wrap them tightly. The water level must be lowered at least one foot beneath the skimmer when using a cover made of mesh. It must be lowered no more than six inches below the tile when using a floating cover.

Equipment: The pump, filter, and other equipment must be completely drained. If possible, the pump and filter should be stored indoors. It is a good time to lubricate the pump lid o-rings as well.

Cleaning: The pool must be skimmed, vacuumed, and brushed clean. All leaves must be removed. To get rid of all algae from the pool sides, it may be necessary to scrub with some muscle. It is essential that the pool is as clean as possible before it is covered.

Take Care Of Plumbing And Chemicals: An inground pool should have its lines blown out from the skimmer, through all equipment, then to the pool again. The lines can finally be plugged. An above ground pool will need the hoses disconnected and all outlets plugged. Algaecide and shock must be added to the water, but not at the same time. This will prevent covers from being destroyed.

Final Cover: Before covering the pool, an air pillow must be inserted to an above ground pool to make room for ice expansion. Then it is time to purchase a cover. It is vital to find a pool cover that fits tightly. There should never be holes for dirt to enter the pool. Solid covers will need to be siphoned on a regular basis to get rid of excess water from the rain or snow melt. Water bags are often used to secure the cover on an inground pool, while a cable device is utilized on an above ground pool cover.
